About Us

We believe every baby deserves a name they can be proud of

urbabyname was built because finding the right name for your baby is harder than it should be. Most name sites are outdated, ugly, or paywalled behind a credit card. We built something better — a free, beautiful, data-rich platform where parents from every background can discover names from every culture on earth.

Our Mission

To give every expecting parent the tools, data, and inspiration they need to find the perfect name for their baby — regardless of their cultural background, budget, or where they live.

We combine the world's largest curated name database with real US birth certificate statistics, modern AI assistance, and thoughtfully designed tools that make the naming journey enjoyable rather than stressful.

What Makes urbabyname Different

167,000+ Names

Far more than any other free name site. Every origin, every religion, every style.

Real SSA Data

Actual US birth certificate counts from 1950-2023. Not estimates or guesses.

AI Name Matching

Not a random generator — cross-references your preferences against a structured database.

Couple Mode

A smarter way for two parents to agree on a name. Works without accounts for the partner.

What We Stand For

Inclusive by Design

We believe every parent deserves access to names from every culture and tradition. Our database spans 100+ origins, 20+ religions, and every letter of the alphabet — not just the top 100 American names.

Data You Can Trust

Our popularity data comes directly from the US Social Security Administration — the same source used by hospitals and government agencies. When we say a name was given to 15,000 babies in 2023, we mean it.

Built for Real Parents

We tested every feature with real expecting parents. Couple Mode came from watching friends argue for months over names. The Sibling Matcher came from parents who wanted new babies to fit with existing siblings. Every feature solves a real problem.

Free to Start

You should never need to pay just to see if a name you like is taken. Our free tier gives you real tools — browse, search, Couple Mode, and Sibling Matcher — without asking for your credit card.

Where Our Data Comes From

Our SSA popularity data comes directly from the US Social Security Administration's annual baby name files. These are the same files that power SSA.gov's official name search tool. We use only national-level data — not state-specific — to give the most accurate picture of a name's overall US popularity.

Our cultural name database was built by aggregating and curating name lists from publicly available cultural sources, published name databases, and linguistic research. Every name includes its origin, meaning (where known), and cultural context.

Note: SSA data only covers births in the United States. If you're looking for name popularity in other countries, those numbers will differ — but the names themselves are valid globally.
